JIM combines a deep awareness of site opportunities and available resources with a vision of a post-Anthropocene world that embodies the best of our urban and environmental systems. These process-centric values frame an architecture of efficiency, logic, and beauty with clean lines and forms that allows occupants of all types to thrive. The result is an architecture that is relevant, timeless, and innovative while also reflective of the values and character of our clients.

We acknowledge that we work on the ancestral, traditional, unceded and occupied Indigenous territories of the Coast Salish Peoples and, in particular, the hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ speaking xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Tsəl̓ílwətaʔɬ /Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) and Skwxwú7mesh Snichim speaking Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish) Nations. To achieve our ambition, we built a practice model for the 21st-century building industry. The firm’s principal, James Huemoeller, has worked on various project types over the years as a project manager for construction firms and as a designer. Experience has shown him that few firms are fully leveraging the technological developments of the last thirty years to provide a streamlined design process with close collaboration between designers, engineers, and contractors. At the same time, as architectural firms continue to consolidate, there are fewer and fewer firms that provide personal consulting services with their best talent front and centre.

JIM is a response to both issues. First, our workload never exceeds our principal’s ability to be involved at every stage from conception to the warranty review. Second, our reliance on a team of expert consultants rather than in-house services provides our clients an expanded range of capacities. Our flexible mindset towards design ensures that we can tailor our team to specific needs as they develop. Not every project needs a climate consultant, archaeologist, structural engineer, or maintenance expert. However, we also cannot predict what we will need throughout the course of a given project. JIM works by building the right team for each project as the concept develops, relying on a highly collaborative progression based on the most advanced project management, BIM, environmental analysis, and other tools. JIM provides clients with an individualized touch while meeting the demands of building in the 21st century.

  • James Huemoeller

    Principal

A licensed architect James runs JIM, a studio focused on researching and designing public buildings and landscapes. Before starting his firm, James worked for the architecture and urban research offices in Philadelphia, Anchorage, and San Francisco.

Beyond practice, James is an assistant professor at the University of British Columbia, where he teaches graduate architecture studios. His research looks at urban morphology and the environment, including two archaeological projects in which he tests new processes for understanding our built environment.
