Cammdige House is a 1914 foursquare style farmhouse that was moved from its original location at 301 Boundary Bay Road to Boundary Bay Regional Park in 1998. It was restored by the Greater Vancouver Regional District (now Metro Vancouver) for public use, but the patio had major structural issues that required the facility to close.

JIM was brought on to repair the damage and revise the access to the house. Our strategy was to pull the existing ramp off the house and reconnect it with a short bridge, giving the home more space to celebrate its historic qualities.

The repairs to the deck included replacing and mending the existing columns and revising the guardrail detail to provide better drainage and greater redundancy to protect against the intense rainfall events that characterize the park. In addition, the stairs and their sidewalls were rebuilt on a more stable footing concealed beneath the brick paving.

Space2place provided a revised planting design for the east face with native vegetation, while enhancing the landscape with a more durable palette that fits the marine context. The existing brick pathway was simplified, and new handrails were added to improve life safety, accessibility, and the aesthetics of the contemporary interventions. All the existing paving was salvaged and reused on the project.

Though a small project, it demonstrates careful attention to detail, achieving the refined, durable qualities that define JIM’s work.
