How can architecture play a supporting role?

Sheffield Park Washroom

Complete

Coquitlam, British Columbia, Canada

2022

The Sheffield Park Washroom is part of a new park located in Coquitlam. The park sits on a steep hill sloping from north to south, leaving no space for a flat building site. Therefore, the design team will install the washroom below grade and use the roof as a lookout to the Frasier Valley below. Careful grading ensures that there are still clear visual sightlines from the street to the washroom door while buried.

A New Neighbourhood Park

Planning for Sheffield Park dates back to 2011, when the City acquired the land and designated it for a future park, based on the Smiling Creek Neighbourhood Plan. Almost a decade later, much of the new housing around the site has been developed and demand is continuing to build for outdoor amenities to complement other parks in the area, such as Riley and Smiling Creek Parks.

A Fully Touchless Washroom

The single-stall washroom uses radiant heat and daylight and is 100% touchless from the sensor-operated door actuator to the wall-mounted fixtures. Bright wall panels enliven the areas and ensure the washroom contributes positively to the park experience.
