“Conceptualizing the Technical: The Britannia Beach Community Hall and Bathhouse” Studio led by James Huemoeller

Student work by Sasha Jed.

James Huemoeller will be teaching the “Conceptualizing the Technical: The Britannia Beach Community Hall and Bathhouse” graduate comprehensive studio at UBC SALA alongside Laura Killam, Mathew Soules, Peeroj Thakre, and Inge Roecker.

This studio will focus on conceptualizing technical material in the design process and to think, quite directly, about how ideas are embodied in or conveyed by the technical systems and material used to accommodate necessity. The site for the studio is in Britannia Beach, a small unincorporated community approximately 55 kilometers north of Vancouver on the Sea-to-Sky Highway on Howe Sound. The program is a community hall and bathhouse for Britannia Beach and includes an array of programmatic elements – a large hall for events, ranging from community meetings to small conferences, a series of pools and saunas/steam baths, and a small hotel. In addition to these core functions, the building will include support spaces such as administrative offices, a restaurant, and gift shop.
